Princess Diana’s Audi & Elton John’s Rolls-Royce Soars to Record in Classic-Car Sale
The 1994 metallic-green car was one of a number of lots with royal and celebrity provenance. A Rolls-Royce Corniche Convertible, previously owned by the Qatari royal family, sold for £135,000, while a 1980 Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith II owned by Princess Margaret sold for £97,750. A 2012 Bentley Mulsanne used by Queen Elizabeth II is still available for sale by private agreement for £230,000 after failing to sell.
A 1976 Bentley T1 owned by film director Michael Winner is also still available at about £43,700. A Rolls-Royce Phantom from 2005, owned and used by Sir Elton John for his civil wedding, sold for £123,750.
Among the auction surprises was a tiny 1972 Fiat 500L, once the personal car of Samantha Cameron, wife of former UK Prime Minister David Cameron, which sold for £20,813. A 1988 Porsche 928 S4 has had Porsche fans expressing amazement online after it sold for a jaw-dropping £49,500. The model was as new, with just one owner and only 18,500 miles on its odometer. (The sale also included a 1979 928 auto at a rather more normal £13,800; this model is still seeking a buyer.)
